Government to focus on training of heavy vehicle drivers
BY SIM LEOI LEOI
SEPANG: The Government will focus on the training and re-education of heavy commercial vehicle drivers as a step towards reducing road accidents in the country. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said it aimed to achieve a “zero accident” target among heavy vehicle drivers by instilling in them the right attitude and mentality when they are on the road. “Despite the numerous road safety campaigns throughout the years, they have not been successful as our advice have fallen on deaf ears and the rate of accidents continue to be high. “Many of the accidents were due to the human factor so we must address our problem with the drivers themselves. For a start, we must focus on lorry, bus or even heavy military truck drivers. “I hope we can achieve a ‘zero accident’ target among heavy commercial vehicles,” he said when launching the Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE), a training centre for drivers of heavy commercial vehicles, here yesterday. He said such training centres played an important role in reducing the number of road accidents by helping drivers improve their driving skills. “The centre should not limit itself to just training commercial vehicle drivers but those of private cars and motorcyclists because motorcyclists have a high fatality rate in Malaysia. “I hope government agencies will take the initiative to send their drivers, especially those with heavy commercial trucks and lorries, for training here,” Abdullah said. Earlier, ACE director Aminuddin Omar said the centre was aiming to be accredited by the Government and be allowed to issue licences to those they train. Abdullah said the Government would consider the centre's proposal. The centre, built on a 100ha plot of land, is Malaysia’s largest purpose-built driver training facility and is home to the longest training track for commercial vehicles with a track length of 4.2km. It is also the biggest in South-East Asia. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy, who also attended the event, said the ministry would consider whether to appoint the centre to carry out driving tests on behalf of the Government for drivers of heavy vehicles.
